It’s also the time to think about securing your home computer now that the kids are at home all day and bored. Here are a few things to think about.

Update your antivirus software
Kids have a tendency to click on anything that looks cool, this can lead to downloading malware or viruses. By making sure your antivirus is up to date you can prevent your computer from being infected. If you don’t have antivirus software or if yours has expired two of the better known free antivirus programs are Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG free antivirus.

Filter web content
Filtering what your kids see on the Internet is important, and it’s also difficult. With kids from 4 to 9 at home I am a firm beleiver that it’s better to block everything and only allow what you want them to see rather than allow everything and then block the bad stuff.  With that in mind I use and recommend Norton Online Family.  It’s free for the basic version, supports multiple profiles for different age children and it works.

Filter email content
With kids out of school they will wont to stay in close contact with there friends, and what better way is there than email (so they don’t tie up the phone, or use up all of the minutes).  Unfortunately just as with web content, giving kids full access to email can put them at risk.  You can keep your kids safe while letting them keep in contact with there school friends by email by using FrazzleMail which is a safe and fun email program for kids.  Your kids can only send and receive email from people in a trusted list, and both incoming and outgoing email  are checked for inappropriate words and phrases.

How your kids access your computer
Most of us use one user account for our whole family. This may be fine for those with really young children that are never alone at the computer, but if you have older kids you may want to consider giving them their own limited user accounts. The default user account on most computers have permission to do anything on the computer, by setting up limited user accounts for your children you can protect your computer and your files.
